Using This Directory Effectively

Your National Job Hotline Directory is organized to allow you to quickly find the job hotlines for the employers that interest you. There’s a chapter for each state and the District of Columbia, as well as one for Canada. There’s also a chapter of toll–free job hotlines and a chapter of nationwide hotlines. Each chapter is divided into as many as 11 sections:

• Municipal Government;
• County Government
• State Government;
• Federal Government;
• Computers & Computer Related;
• Education;
• Financial;
• Hospitality;
• Medical & Health Care Related;
• Retail;
• Miscellaneous.

The “Nationwide Job Hotlines” chapter includes some hotlines that are also listed in the state chapters. This was done to make it practically impossible for a reader to miss these job hotlines.

Finally, a word about the validity of telephone numbers, area codes, and company locations. This directory includes only job hotlines we were able to call ourselves. But as time passes, phone numbers change, new area codes are assigned, job hotlines are terminated, companies go out of business or change their names. Nobody can control these factors. To at least remedy the problem of rapidly changing area codes, we’ve provided a sidebar earlier in this chapter that offers several ways to keep abreast of area code changes. Each job hotline listing includes the city in which the company is located to make it easier for you to find the new area code if the area code has changed after this directory was published.

You now have an idea of what your skills are, what jobs to which they might be best applied, and employers for whom you might want to work. Add this to the geographic location where you would like or need to live and you’re almost ready to start making your jobline calls.
